Recognizing the Patterns That Shape Our Giving
Over years of advising people on charitable giving, I have seen consistent patterns. Many of us want to give well, but often follow routines we inherited—especially giving a fixed percentage, like ten percent, to the local church. I lived this pattern myself, seeing giving as a way to avoid guilt and fulfill spiritual duty, rarely questioning if my efforts truly aligned with what matters most. In the Western church, for many, these habits go unexamined and the reasons behind them can fade into the background.
The New Testament invites us to something more—a life where every part, including our finances, is offered for a greater purpose. There is no command for a tithe, but rather a picture of believers surrendering all for the sake of making disciples and serving those in need. This shift is not just theoretical. It challenges us, asking if our giving truly reflects a desire to see all people have access to the gospel and freedom from extreme poverty.
Rethinking Giving Through a Redeemed Lens
This realization did not come easily for me. Early in my life, I was an engineer with a good job and a comfortable routine. I gave regularly, but my giving was disconnected from impact. Eventually, through serving internationally, returning to study theology, and seeking advice from trusted leaders, I began re-examining not just how much I was giving but why and to whom.
A redeemed perspective views generosity as a core asset—akin to running shoes for a runner—essential for following Jesus and joining His work. I found that planning for giving as the first line item each year or month set the tone for the rest of my financial life and clarified my priorities. At All Access, we encourage members to make giving intentional by aligning it with the mission of making disciples and serving in the most unreached and impoverished places.
Our process is thorough. We apply a five-step evaluation to select partners in our portfolio, listen to leading advisors, and provide full transparency. Members see transparent updates for every program and expense, fostering a clear connection between each contribution and the outcome on the ground. This approach replaces guilt with clarity and joy in knowing the outcomes.
Overcoming Barriers and Building a Meaningful Practice
Barriers to impactful giving—such as uncertainty, routine, or lack of visible results—are common. In my experience, the turning point comes with honest reflection: Am I giving because I want to, or because I feel I have to? What am I trusting my giving to accomplish?
We have seen that placing giving first, and integrating it into clear commitments, enables a sense of agency. Seeing transparent updates from our portfolio partners—such as people in South Asia gaining access to the gospel or clean water—shapes giving into something participatory and rewarding. We facilitate this journey, but each member is a vital part of the impact.
